Each situation of trafficking or sexual exploitation is different. It is true that most involve adult men in organized crime groups. There are organized networks in some Canadian provinces and even between Canada and other countries. Some networks recruit teenagers to force them to become recruiters for other young people: teens are less suspicious simply because they’re the same age. But there are also some people involved in trafficking or sexual exploitation without being part of an organized network or criminal organization. Some can recruit others in a more “individualized” manner, for their own benefit. It’s even possible for some teens to recruit among themselves to form a team and provide sexual services together: this arrangement is sometimes seen in places frequented by young people. Furthermore, people who recruit or exploit young people can be men as well as women. In short, trafficking and sexual exploitation has many faces, as do the recruiters and their victims.
